I first met bill back in my schooldays I'd be about 12yrs old, when I was about fourteen years old I had a date with bills sister at the pictures (cinema) the Palace in Levenshulme, she is a year or so older than me, so you can imagine my immaturity!  Half way through the evening I asked if I could "smudge her lipstick" So funny.  she is a great girl and a few years later I met bill, he lived in Levenshulme with his first wife Sue and there Daughter Julie, in Ballerat st off Barlow rd, I used to drink in the Polygon, Levenshulme, with Bills father Harry.  Bill and I soon found friendship and Bill was eager to learn guitar and his father Harry was always pushing me to help bill get on stage ( I was working at places like the Poco a Poco and Bernard Manning's Embassy at the time) we used to get together at my house until he moved to Silver Hill, Milnrow, then we used to meet and play at East Levenshulme cricket club, around that time we started to play with Banjo's, and we bought several from various second hand shops and did them up! eventually we both ended up with reasonable Banjos and we were both new to banjos, and bills guitar playing was progressing greatly, I started using the five string in my cabaret act doing a send up of Roy Woods "When grandma plays the Banjo" and I was busy doing the clubs and Bill was having transport problems getting to Levenshulme and back to Milnrow (20mile each way) so after a while bill stopped coming to Levenshulme and we just made contact now and then.   I left Levenshulme and moved to Todmorden due to the split up of my first marriage, and then me and my present wife Barbara moved to Littleborough, 5 Claremont Terrace, Warland, and I kept in contact with Bill who by now had moved to Blind lane, Todmorden, when we moved to our first pub in Wigan we rented out our house at Warland to a young woman, when we moved to our second pub, the Railway, in Littleborough Bill moved into our old house at Claremont Terrace for a short time when he moved on, we kept in contact!  I lost my drive for playing the five-string after introducing it into my stage act, I knew that would happen!  But Bill carried on to become one of, if not the best Five string Banjo players this side of the Atlantic!  I had the pleasure of recording Bill and his band Po-Crackers about eighteen months ago, they agreed to performing and releasing three pieces of music for the album we recorded "One flew over the Pennines" Put in Google, one flew over the Pennines!  Bill we will always love you and never forget you, your old friends Tony & Barbara ...
